NZ Free Day in Queenstown (Saturday, Feb 13)

After having a couple of hours in Queenstown a few days ago, I was thinking that our free day here would be pretty long for me. I didn’t see that much that I’d be interested in. Now that I’ve had a day here, I realize I could spend many more days here and not get bored!

After a good sleep-in (slept ’til 8:00 AM!), Diana and I agreed we’d do the 10 AM Free Walking Tour of Queenstown (http://freewalkingtoursqueenstown.co.nz/) that Katie had mentioned. This was a two-hour tour that gave us some background on the history and features of Queenstown. Mark (the tour guide) was very informative and entertaining and we enjoyed it a lot.

Then we stopped in at the Active Adventures office to say hi. I got a good referral to a place to get a massage, so we headed there next. My legs have been very tight with all the exercise we’ve been getting and I was looking forward to a little pampering. They were able to fit me in right away and it was great!

Rather than wait, Diana headed back on her own and we agreed to meet up later at the hotel. After the massage, I did some shopping, got some lunch, and then wandered back to the hotel. I spent some time doing laundry, then Diana and I met up and spent some time just chillin’.

Eventually we walked out to look for some dinner, then came back and started packing up for tomorrow. It seemed like it was going to be a long day, but I haven’t had time to much in the way of reading or taking my Great Courses, or anything else I brought along to entertain myself!

I didn’t take many pictures. The harbor is Queenstown Bay on Lake Wakatipu. It’s where we started and ended the tour and is a focal point of the town, which kind of spreads out around it. Looking up from the harbor is the structure where the gondolas go up to. That’s one of the places they do Bungie Jumping, too (the Ledge), which Diana decided not to do here, BTW. You can see a couple of parasails up there, too, where the wind currents are strong.

The scenery is just so gorgeous. I feel like I want to get pictures of everything, but I feel like that would take too much time to do properly, so I end up taking pictures of very little. I’m thinking I should have brought by point-and-shoot to do the travelogue. Oh well.

Back to the “active” part of this adventure tomorrow!
