Alaska 2018

Wrapping Up Alaska 2018

No pictures in this post, so see previous entries for those (trip starts here). On this page, I wanted to put the titles of the panels that The Nation magazine presented on this 21st Annual Seminar Cruise. The panelists were awesome; I’m so impressed and humbled by the work they do. I’ll be reading many of their books, I’m sure!

To preface the list, I must say that these were essentially conversations, not lectures. The titles sound like the point was to present definitive solutions, but they were rather starting points for getting the panelists takes on the general subject. (The list of panelists is at the end of this post.)

So without further ado, here are the titles:

  • Progressive Insurgents, the Midterm Elections and the Future of the Democratic Party
  • How to Think About SCOTUS and the Courts
  • Civility–Why?
  • Climate Change and the Geopolitical Competition for the Arctic Region
  • Needed: A New Foreign Policy
  • Sports, Patriotism & Resistance
  • How to Prevent Mass Shootings and Gun Violence in America
  • The Future of Media
  • Whither the 14th Amendment
  • The Fight for the Future has Already Begun, but Neither Party is Talking About It
  • The Women of the Resistance
  • The Business of The Nation
  • How to Stop the Muslim Ban and Win the Immigration Debate
  • The Global Hunger Epidemic and How to End It
  • Where Do We Go From Here? How to Build a New Politics in the Age of Trump

The panelists for each of the talks varied, but the entire list is:

  • Katrina vanden Heuvel (editor of The Nation)
  • John Nichols
  • Joan Walsh
  • Sasha Abramsky
  • Ruth Messinger
  • Laila Lalami
  • Patricia Williams
  • Victor Navasky
  • Dave Zirin
  • Michael Klare
  • John Fugelsang (also a comedian, who presented a couple of late-night topical comedy performances)

I learned a lot on this cruise, not only from the panel sessions, but also from talking to my fellow passengers. We had (mostly) different dinner companions each night and I met some wonderful folks. It was great to share concerns, stories, and observations.
